FULL-TIME FACULTY POSITIONS


History

Founded in 1873 as a Christian liberal arts college and affiliated since 1920 with the Mississippi Baptist Convention, Blue Mountain College seeks applications and nominations for a faculty member in History as an Assistant or Associate Professor beginning Fall, 2018.

The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, one of eight academic units in the college, employs four full time faculty and enrolls over 100 students in its nine different degree programs. Blue Mountain College seeks faculty who are active Christians and dedicated teacher-scholars to assist students in developing intellectual integrity, academic excellence, social awareness and Christian character. Blue Mountain College is located in the hills of Northeast Mississippi approximately 35 miles from Tupelo and 65 miles from Memphis, Tennessee in a small village, which bears the same name - Blue Mountain.

Blue Mountain College seeks an individual to teach undergraduate courses in Western Civilization, European History, Geography, as well as Methods of Teaching Social Science.

Faculty Responsibilities:
Activities required of all faculty include competency in the discipline, a high level of proficiency as a teacher, student recruitment and retention, curriculum development, academic advising, committee service, and service to the department, college, and the community.

Responsibilities: Teach courses in History and, possibly, Geography and Methods of Teaching. Serve on college committees, provide student academic advisement and contribute professional expertise in a positive way to the profession and to the larger community.

Desired Qualifications: Qualifications include an earned doctorate in History or related field (ABD considered), background in Western Civilization, experience and demonstrated success in college teaching. Past experience teaching in secondary education.

Director of Library Services

Blue Mountain College seeks faculty and staff who are active Christians and dedicated teacher-scholars to assist students in developing intellectual integrity, academic excellence, social awareness and Christian character. Responsibilities:
The Director of Library Services performs the administrative, supervisory and professional work in planning and delivering the highest quality of library services. Other responsibilities include: coordinating with the Librarian for Collection Management in overseeing the daily operation of the Guyton Library, including coordinating the responsibilities of library staff, student workers, and volunteers; coordinating with the Librarian for Collection Management in identifying and completing special and/or long-term projects; preparing an annual library budget in consultation with Librarian for Collection Management; updating the Library web pages; and updating computers and requesting services from the Director of Information Technology Services.

Qualifications:
MLS from an ALA accredited library and information science program and adequate and appropriate professional experience; strong oral and written communication skills; ability to deal tactfully with the public, and displays a commitment to public service; knowledge of best practices and current trends in the provision of library services; understanding of current issues in academic librarianship; demonstrated commitment to the profession; comprehensive understanding of the technology-driven information environment; experience with library information systems; ability to involve total staff in decision-making responsibilities and activities; and willingness to devote mental and physical efforts necessary to maximize the most efficient usage of all library resources.

FULL-TIME STAFF POSITIONS


Dean of Students

The Dean of Students serves as the Chief Student Affairs Officer and provides leadership for all activities related to non-academic student life. Areas of responsibility include resident living, student health services, student activities, and organizations. The Dean of Students advises the President’s Cabinet on matters pertaining to student life.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Collaborate with other administrators, faculty, and students to create and maintain a cultural and social environment which encourages the well-rounded development and success of individual students;
  • Develop and administer processes and procedures which promote active student involvement in extracurricular activities and development of student leadership;
  • Develop and maintain standards governing student conduct and oversee a system for the fair and effective administration of student discipline;
  • Operate and manage all residential facilities;
  • Administer the office budgets;
  • Hire, train, and evaluate staff that includes five residence hall directors, a department administrative assistant, and resident assistants;
  • Respond to students’ concerns and suggestions;
  • Order housing furniture and equipment;
  • Work closely with Chief Operating Officer to coordinate maintenance and renovations;
  • Update housing contracts and handbooks;
  • Make housing assignments;
  • Serve on college committees as assigned;
  • Assess the effectiveness of programs and services in areas of responsibility and the performance of staff who report directly to the Dean of Students;
  • Monitor Chapel absences;
  • Perform other related duties as needed to support the goals of the department and mission of the college;
  • Due to the nature of the position, the director must either reside on or in reasonable proximity to campus.
  • Live a life congruent with the College mission both on and off campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • Three years of experience working in residence life at an institution of higher education.
  • Supervisory experience. Experience administering budgets;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Willingness to be on call and work evenings and weekends as necessary.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree
  • Five or more years of residence life experience at an institution of higher education.
  • Experience developing or working with residential learning communities.
