BMC Wellness Center to hold open house Saturday

BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – After four months of intense renovation, the Blue Mountain College Wellness Center has opened its doors to the college’s students, faculty and staff.

On Saturday the school will hold an open house for the public at 10 a.m.

“We are so pleased to be able to provide our students, faculty, staff, and community access to this type of facility,” said Dr. Barbara Childers McMillin.

BMC received a $200,000 grant from the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation in late January and in May the renovation of a warehouse adjacent to the college’s Department of Education began.

“We are grateful to the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation of Mississippi and to the many volunteers who partnered with our staff to make this happen,” McMillin said. “Our hope is that the center will serve our community well.”

The 7,800-square foot facility includes a 4,200-square foot workout area, two classrooms and three offices.

The workout area has four elliptical machines, four treadmills, three recumbent bikes, and weight machines and equipment for 31 exercise stations.

Amy Thurmond, director of the wellness center, said she was eager for the Blue Mountain community to see what BMC has to offer.

“It’s really exciting to be a part of a new wellness center – one that will meet the needs of all our students, faculty and staff,” she said. “We’re also looking forward to making it available to our community in the near future.”
