Carnegie lists Blue Mountain College as a Baccalaureate educational institution offering Diverse Fields. Total institutional enrollment for Fall 2010 was 553, 14 of whom were graduate students in elementary education. The College’s student population is drawn from 20 states and 4 countries with a student/faculty ratio of 14 to 1. Approximately 250 students live on campus in one of the three resident halls or one of the four College-owned houses in very close proximity to the campus. The strong mix of residential and commuter students makes up a student culture which is vibrant and healthy. Ninety-eight percent of full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate students receive financial aid.
Blue Mountain College offers 15 undergraduate majors and one graduate program in elementary education. In undergraduate programming, the College has affiliation agreements with North Mississippi Medical Center Medical Technology Program, Union University School of Nursing, and Northeast Mississippi Community College, Construction Engineering Technology Program.
The College is committed to academic excellence. The number of full-time faculty with a terminal degree has increased from 50% ten years ago to 79% projected for Fall 2011. The College has established five national honor societies: Theta Alpha Kappa (Religious Studies and Theology), Kappa Delta Pi (Education), Sigma Tau Delta (English), Beta Beta Beta (Biology), and Pi Gamma Mu (Social Science).

A Summer Institute funded by the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act:
Improving Teacher Quality has been offered by the College. It has
attracted local public school teachers to enhance their teaching skills
in integrating mathematics and science in K-8 classrooms. A number of
these teachers have entered the graduate program at the College
following participation in the Institute. Additional graduate programs
are being studied. The College has recently established a partnership
with a public university to offer 12 hours in a master’s program in
educational leadership at Blue Mountain College.
Over the past five years, the College has implemented The Keystone
Project designed to improve the reading, writing, and mathematical
skills of undergraduate students. The College has also established
service-learning courses in the major in a number of academic
departments as well as internships. The Freshman Year Experience is an
integral part of the orientation of freshmen to collegiate study. The
College has developed partnerships with local school districts to offer
dual enrollment courses. |

Blue Mountain College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate and

The Teacher Preparation Program at Blue Mountain College is approved by
the Commission on Teacher and Administrator Education, Certification and
Licensure and Development and the Mississippi State Board of Education.
Blue Mountain College is a member of the TranSouth Conference of the
National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The BMC Toppers
engage in these sports: Basketball for Men and Women; Cross-Country for
Men and Women; Baseball; Fast-pitch Softball; and Golf.
In 2004, the College began participating in the U. S. News & world
Report rankings. The institution’s rankings have improved every year
since that time. The College was ranked No. 25 out of 46 in the South
among Best Regional Colleges in the 2011 edition, up from No. 27 in 2010
and No. 30 in 2009. |
