Good Morning!

If you were able to join us for the gala Friday evening then, like me, you are probably still recovering from having laughed so hard and so long at the humor of “The Swan.” Dr. Dennis Swanberg entertained us and inspired us as the keynote speaker for the third annual BMC Scholarship Gala. We are grateful to our many sponsors for “planting shade trees” at Blue Mountain College through their generous gifts. Scholarship donations are expected to pass $200,000! For this great blessing we say thanks be to God!

The list of individuals who volunteered their time and expertise to contribute to the success of this year’s gala is an extremely long one that includes faculty, staff, and students. To each of you I offer a heartfelt thank you for giving of your time and talents to this important cause. Outstanding leadership was provided by Jody Hill and Nancy Grisham with tremendous support from the planning committee, including Becky Benson of The Peoples Bank, Tommy Peters, Tommy Tapp, Emma Ainsworth, and Kevin Barefield.

Congratulations are in order for the award recipients who were announced at Awards Day on Friday. A special word of commendation goes to Dr. Stewart Bennett for being named the 2018 Faculty Member of the Year. Dr. Bennett is well-deserving of this very special recognition.

End-of-the-year events are winding down as we focus our attention now on the “big day.” Commencement is less than two weeks away. Seniors—stay focused and finish strong!

Tonight at 7:00 in Broach we will commission our summer missionaries and camp staffers. On Friday we will welcome to campus our Board of Trustees for their quarterly meeting. We will begin at 8:00 with a devotion and time of prayer led by Dr. David Hamilton in room 114 of Coward-Martin Hall. If your schedule allows, please come and participate in this special time of worship and intercession.

Please join me in welcoming to the BMC family Mrs. Brandi Bass to serve as Enrollment Services Assistant. Brandi is the wife of Tim Bass, pastor at Harmony Baptist Church in Walnut, and the mother of BMC student Britt Bass. Brandi begins work on April 30.

Greetings!
Much will happen in this the last week before dead week, and it can all be summed up in one word: CELEBRATION! At BMC we have much for which to praise our great God, and we will do so in some special ways this week.

Tonight our fine arts students will highlight the accomplishments of the year with a showcase of the year’s best performances at 7:00 in Garrett. Wednesday at 3:00 in the SUB we will celebrate all of our Mountain Breeze winners. Thursday we will observe Research Day at 3:00 in the SUB—a time to learn about and celebrate the scholarly achievements of our students and their faculty mentors. At 4:30 on Thursday we will hear from our students who have earned the distinction of being Leora Duce Leadership scholars. We are grateful that Dr. Duce will be present to congratulate these students personally. We’ll close out the evening on Thursday at 7:30 with the Chorale’s spring concert (a preview of their Carnegie Hall performance).

On Friday we officially begin the 2018 commencement season with the Awards Day service during the chapel period at 10:00. Student accomplishments will be heralded and the 2018 Faculty Member of the Year will be named. I encourage everyone to participate to the extent possible in each of these worthy celebrations. Even before the winners are announced I want to extend my congratulations to all. Thank you for your hard work, your dedication, and your commitment to excellence.

In addition to Awards Day, Friday brings with it one of BMC’s newer yet highly anticipated traditions: the annual Scholarship Gala. We are excited to welcome America’s “Minister of Encouragement” Dr. Dennis Swanberg to Blue Mountain College as our featured speaker. Having heard “the Swan” on several occasions, I can tell you that we are in for a treat. As the saying goes, we will be “rolling in the aisles” with laughter. The gala will conclude with a tribute to President Emerita Dr. Bettye Rogers Coward and to former Chairman of the Board Dr. Bobby P. Martin as the education building officially becomes “Coward-Martin Hall.”

A look around campus confirms that we are ready for guests. Please join me in expressing thanks to Kelly Rushing and the staff of NMR for making the Hill shine in preparation for our big events.

Congratulations are in order this week for Mr. Jody Hill, who will transition into the role of Vice President for Community Relations and Director of the Blue Mountain College Foundation.

Kudos also to Coach Barefield and our men’s Topper golfers for bringing home first place from the Martin Methodist Spring Invitational.

I spent much of last week away from campus attending a meeting in Tucson. Being away, however, did not prevent me from enjoying at least a portion of the delightful concert presented by the Blue Mountain College band, under the direction of Brandon Hardin. For those of you who were unable to attend, here’s an excerpt from Blue Sound’s outstanding performance.

Celebrate!

I will tell of the kindnesses of the LORD, the deeds for which he is to be praised, according to all the LORD has done for us-- yes, the many good things he has done for Israel, according to his compassion and many kindnesses. Isaiah 63:7

Good Morning,
Brrrrr—the calendar says it is April, but the temperature feels more like January! What happened to spring? We won’t let the return of winter distract us from the many opportunities that this week holds for us at BMC. Coach Curt Fowler will tell his story in chapel today. Drew Warford will present his senior recital at 7:00 tomorrow night in Garrett. Wednesday busloads of kindergarten students will liven up the campus for our annual Literacy on the Lawn program. Thursday evening our band will present its spring concert at 6:00 in the auditorium. Friday afternoon the Tennessee Shakespeare Company will perform at 2:30 in Garrett. Wednesday through Saturday you can enjoy a variety of home Topper baseball and softball options.

I will be traveling this week (Wednesday afternoon through Friday) to Tucson to attend a meeting of the NAICU Board of Directors.

Many thanks to the Greater Memphis Area Alumni group for hosting a wonderful scholarship luncheon and silent auction on Saturday.

Congratulations are in order for the BMC bass fishing team of Ty Cox and Alden Keel for winning the Mississippi Bass Nation Collegiate Qualifier over the weekend, earning for them a spot in the national championship in July. Way to go, Topper anglers!

Blessings to all for a productive week!
