Good Afternoon!

What a wonderful weekend!  Spring sunshine is energizing—I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.  My weekend included the opportunity to meet many of our Memphis area alumni and friends.  Kudos to Audrey Caldwell, Emily Crump Hayes, and all who made the Memphis Area Spring Scholarship Luncheon such a special event.

Let me remind everyone that Inauguration Week is fast approaching.  If you have not been able to register your attendance online, please call 1-662-685-4771 and speak with Pam Bowman.  Details regarding inaugural events are posted on our website at http://www.bmc.edu/inauguration.asp.

Theatre lovers take note:  at 7:30 tonight in Garrett Auditorium the Department of Fine Arts will present the BMC Musical Theatre Showcase.  The event is free and promises to be a fun evening featuring songs from more than a dozen Broadway musicals.

Sports lovers will be excited to hear that our Lady Toppers Softball team swept two games with Bethel last week to secure sole possession of second place in the TranSouth conference.  They take on  nationally ranked Freed-Hardeman today at 5 and 7 in Henderson.  Two wins will put us a half game behind conference leader Freed.  It is a short 70-mile trip—not too far to go to show our softball ladies our support!  Freed travels here on Friday and Saturday for baseball.

Mandy Lane presents her student recital tomorrow evening in Garrett at 7:00.

Please remember our BMC Chorale as they depart Wednesday for their concert tour.

On Wednesday we will celebrate “Wacky Weather” as a part of this year’s Literacy on the Lawn event.  A host of kindergarten students will enjoy Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, science demonstrations, and the opportunity to meet meteorologist Dick Rice.  Welcome, future Toppers!

May God bless each of you with a great week!

Good Magnificent Monday Morning to All!

Christ the Lord is risen today!  Hallelujah!

Sunshine is streaming through my windows this morning, heralding the arrival of April and a host of spring activities.  It is hard to believe that we are now in the last full month of the 2012-13 academic year—and this last month promises to be a busy one.  Preparations are underway for an array of inaugural events.  Stay tuned to the website for details.

I am looking forward to being at First Baptist of Hickory Flat this evening for “Magnificent Monday,” a time of community worship in celebration of the Resurrection.  Pine Grove Baptist Church, Flat Rock Baptist Church, and First Methodist Church will join the First Baptist congregation for this special event.  Our chorale will contribute to the evening of worship.

I am delighted this morning to congratulate Jessica Graves, a senior from Ripley, for receiving the first place award for her one-act play Family Ties at the 2013 Southern Literary Festival at Columbus State University.  The Southern Literary Festival originated on the campus of BMC, so this is an especially meaningful award.

Congratulations are also in order for Brandon Bates.   A science education major, Brandon was chosen by the Education faculty as the BMC outstanding teacher intern for the 2012-2013 academic year.  Brandon completed his internship in December and was hired by Desoto County Schools in January.  He will be recognized at a reception this Friday at the Mississippi Department of Education in Jackson for the outstanding teacher interns from all Mississippi public and private colleges/universities.

We are happy to welcome Dr. Rick Blythe of First Baptist, New Albany, to campus today for chapel.

On Wednesday we will welcome area Associational Missions Directors to our campus for their spring meeting.

Please pray for me as I will be speaking to the Ripley AAUW chapter on Thursday evening and then traveling to William Carey University on Friday for our spring Education Commission meeting.  I’m looking forward to being with our Memphis area alumni on Saturday at their spring luncheon.

There is no shortage of Topper activity with baseball and softball in full swing.  The men travel to MississippiValley and to Tougaloo this week; the women play Martin Methodist at home on Tuesday and then travel to Bethel on Friday.  Go, Toppers!

Blessings to all for a Magnificent Monday and a great week!

Greetings to each of you at the beginning of Holy Week!

As I sit down to write this morning, these words are playing in the background of my mind: Ponder anew what the Almighty can do . . . .
Entering into this most blessed Easter season, let us ponder anew the significance of the proclamation “He is not here; he is risen, just as he said.”

The crosses located near the entrance to the campus serve as a visual reminder of our Lord’s sacrifice and of His victory over death.

A word of welcome goes to Dale Cutrer, who begins her work today as Dr. Enzor’s administrative assistant. Dale, we are glad to have you on board.

Welcome also to Christina Teel, who is filling in for Sonia in the Office of the Registrar. Thank you, Christina, for your assistance.

We are excited to welcome representatives from the Town of Blue Mountain to our campus on Tuesday evening for our annual appreciation dinner. We are grateful for our wonderful neighbors and excited about the opportunity to say thank you.

Please continue to remember Dean Jack Moser and his family as they are grieving the loss of his father.

Many thanks to Chris Driskell, Larry McMillin, Mayor Doug Norton, and David Rainey for their work in bringing the cross project to fruition.

The campus will be closed in observation of Good Friday. May your family be blessed as you gather to worship the risen Savior!

Good Morning and Welcome Back!

I trust that everyone enjoyed a restful and refreshing spring break.  With the break behind us, we are pressing on full speed toward the close of this semester.  Today begins the countdown toward the inauguration on April 26 (be on the lookout for the inauguration website premiering soon) and graduation on May 11.  Please be praying for all who are involved in the preparation for these two significant events.

Please remember also Dr. Darwin Brooks and his family.  Dr. Brooks’ mother passed away last week.

It is my pleasure to share the great news that Emanuel Devon Sanders (8 pounds, 7 ounces, 19.5 inches) was born at 8:34 am on Friday, March 15th. Congratulation, Sonia, and family!

Congratulations also to Anna Brooke Page, who was recognized as an Honorable Mention to the Coaches’ All-America Team by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

Signs of spring are everywhere on our beautiful campus.  In celebration of the season’s official arrival this week, students are invited to the lawn of Armstrong Tuesday evening to assist in preparing Easter eggs for the town of Blue Mountain’s egg hunt on Easter weekend.  The fun begins at 5:30 and includes cupcakes!

We will close this week out with special guests on campus.  Please join me in extending a warm welcome home to our ministerial alumni who will be here for MA Day.  Welcome also to the prospective ministerial students who will be in attendance.  We are thankful for you!

Today we will be led by Scott Thomas from First Baptist Church of Brandon as we worship together in chapel.  On Friday, MA President Ron Harrison will lead us.

As we contemplate the wonder of spring, let’s offer praises to our Lord, who has the power to make all things new.  II Corinthians 5:17

Happy Monday Morning!

Winter snowfall on Saturday gave way to spring sunshine on Sunday, giving us a glimpse yet again of our Creator’s artistry and omnipotence!

It was great to see our Alumni Association Board of Directors on campus Saturday; lots of great ideas were generated.  Many thanks to association president Audrey Caldwell and to alumni director Lea Bennett for their work in planning a productive day.

A huge word of congratulations goes out today to Coach Lavon Driskell.  Coach Driskell was named TranSouth women’s Coach of the Year.  Anna Brooke Page was named Newcomer of the Year.  Anna Brooke and Jessi Hayles were both named to the All-TSAC first team; Kati Prince received honorable mention.  From the men’s team, Jarvis Fisher was selected to the All-TSAC second team; Kevin Daniels and Vladimir Filipovic were chosen to the All-Freshmen team.  We are proud of all of our Toppers!

I hope all who attended last week’s production of Forever Plaid enjoyed it as much as I did.  If you were there Tuesday evening you witnessed my theatre debut as a pianist.  My first piano teacher, Rita Clemmer Braddock, just happened to be in attendance and was pleased.  Thanks, guys, for the “help”!

Lea Bennett is our chapel speaker today.  Rebekah Ray, Marketing and Donor Relations officer with the Mississippi Baptist Foundation, will speak to us on Friday.

In observance of Employee Appreciation Day, all faculty and staff are invited to come by the Office of the President between 10:30 and 11:30 today to pick up a small memento as a token of gratitude for all that you do.

Sonia Sanders, Assistant to the Registrar, has officially begun her maternity leave.  Let’s keep Sonia and family in our prayers as they anticipate baby boy’s arrival in the next few days.

Please pray for me as I will be traveling next week to do SACS work on another campus.  Monday messages will resume on March 18.

Next week the campus will pause to observe a much-needed spring break.  Let’s pray that this time away will be safe and restful for all.

Have a great week!

Good Morning!

Wasn’t yesterday a beautiful Lord’s day!  I hope you were blessed by it as much as I was.  Last night I had the privilege of hearing our Chorale sing at First Baptist Church of Baldwyn and of hearing Dr. Meeks open God’s Word and remind us of the great joy that is ours in Christ.  Many thanks to Dr. Meeks, Dr. Long, Laura Long, Lea Bennett, Maria Teel, and our wonderful students for representing BMC so well.

I am grateful to all who prayed for our Board meeting last Friday.  We have an outstanding group of trustees, all of whom are dedicated to serving Blue Mountain College.  I am grateful to the President’s Cabinet for their careful preparation that contributed to a productive day.

Please join me in congratulating Amy Thurmond who has accepted the position of web site coordinator here at the College.

This week promises to be another busy one.  Tomorrow student Sarah Cox and professor Justin Spencer will be honored in Jackson at the 26th Annual Higher Education Day-Working for Academic Excellence (HEADWAE).  Sarah, Dr. Spencer, and I will have the opportunity to tour the State Capitol before attending the awards luncheon.

Tuesday evening is opening night for Forever Plaid, our spring musical comedy.  I hope everyone will make plans to attend.  The show runs for seven performances.  Check our website for more details.

Thursday evening is the annual BSU missions banquet in Ray Dining Hall.  Check with Tracy Moser for more details.

This weekend our Alumni Association Board will be on campus for their spring meeting.  We welcome President Audrey Caldwell and all the Board members back to campus and hope that their time together is productive.

Our Topper basketball teams will be in TranSouth conference play this week.  The men play at 7:00 Thursday night at Bethel; the women play at 7:00 Friday at Martin Methodist.  Both the baseball and softball teams will be in action at home this weekend.

Today we are delighted to have Dr. David Eldridge, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Tupelo, leading our chapel service.  I will have the opportunity to share some of the good things going on at BMC at Calvary this coming Sunday morning.  Please pray for me and for Mandy Lane, who will be singing in the morning service at Calvary.

Blessings to all for a good week!

Good Evening!

It has been a busy Monday resulting in the Monday Message coming rather late in the day!  I trust that your week is off to a good start.

Tuesday will be another busy day on campus as we welcome participants in the math and science tournament to BMC.

Please join me in praying for Pam and Jerry Bowman as they grieve the passing of Jerry’s father.  The funeral will be held at 11:30 tomorrow at Memorial Park Funeral Home in Memphis.

Pray also for our colleagues at Southern who are dealing with the aftermath of yesterday’s tornado.

Blessings to each of you for a productive and pleasant week.
