Blustery Day
Greetings!
It is a pleasure on this blustery day to welcome our returning students and to greet the new students who are taking their first courses at BMC. Of course, we are thankful for our devoted faculty and welcome them back from a much-deserved break.

Periodically this spring in the Monday Message I want to highlight books that I have read or that I am currently reading that I consider to be especially thought-provoking and timely. I look forward to conversing with those of you who have an interest in the same works. Of course, I’m always eager to receive recommendations for “good reads,” so don’t hesitate to pass titles along. The work that has captured my attention in recent days is John S. Dickerson’s The Great Evangelical Recession.

Published in 2013, Dickerson’s book examines the status of evangelical Christianity in the United States. The first half of the book describes the number of evangelical Christians in our nation and projects the impact of what Dickerson presents as a surprising decline. According to Dickerson (and substantiated by a number of studies), evangelicals account for 7% of the population. In the second half of the book Dickerson focuses on a series of steps Christian leaders must take to respond to these changing demographics. Among other responses, Dickerson encourages Christians to make a difference for the Kingdom simply by looking for ways to do good and by devoting ourselves to discipleship. Let us do our best to heed this simple admonition in 2017!

As we settle back in to the swing of things this week, I encourage our students to start strong so that you can finish strong. Form good study habits early and avail yourself of the support available in the TLC. Make this your best semester yet!

Keep me in your prayers as I will travel to Jackson Friday for the winter Education Commission meeting at MC. Our basketball teams will be in Hattiesburg Thursday to take on William Carey and in action again on Saturday here at home. Make plans to be at Tyler Gymnasium at 2:00 to cheer on the Toppers!

Have a great week!
