Greetings on Monday of the first full week of class!
As I have noted before, my family and I really enjoy watching the Olympics and cheering our favorite athletes on to victory. In his daily Breakpoint devotional Eric Metaxas writes today about the many Olympic athletes who are people of faith, including swimmers Katie Ledecky and Simone Manuel, diver David Boudia, and four-time gold medal winner Simone Biles. (Faculty members may recall that Dr. Enzor shared Michael Phelps’ story at our meeting last week.) Noting that we rarely see the testimonies of these Christians in the televised reports, Metaxas shares the story of the rugby team from Fiji. After dominating Great Britain by a score of 43-7, the Fiji team won the country’s first gold medal. Describing their response after this amazing victory, Metaxas writes:
Then the winning players huddled and sang, both in English and Fijian: “We have overcome / We have overcome / By the blood of the Lamb / And the Word of the Lord / We have overcome.” Then they received their medals humbly—on their knees!
What a testimony and what an inspiration for us! May we likewise humble ourselves and give God the glory for the great things He has done!
We were blessed and encouraged today by Dr. Meeks’ chapel message on “Growing Together with BMC.” I look forward to the many opportunities we will have this year to grow together in wisdom, in stature, and in favor with God and man.
Just a reminder—if you did not have an opportunity to affix your signature to the Honor Code banner, you may still do so. It will be on display prior to Chapel in the Lowrey foyer.
Please join me in welcoming some special guests to campus on Wednesday. The members of our Executive Committee and the Finance and Administration Committee will be here to begin analysis of our campus master plan.
Have a great week!
