Good Morning,
As we begin another week at BMC congratulations are in order for our women’s cross country team for finishing second this weekend in the SSAC conference championship. Way to go, ladies! Kelsea Posadas and Page Rowland finished second and third, and Hannah Orrick rounded out the top ten. The team has qualified to participate in the nationals to be held in Kansas City on November 23.
Our chapel speaker today is our own Dr. Douglas Bain, who will be focusing on “The Persecuted Church.” On Friday our BSU Fine Arts teams will lead us.
We welcome to campus today Dr. Terry Dale Cruse from LeTourneau University. Dr. Cruse will be leading a workshop with our enrollment team.
I ask you to join me today in reflecting on the courage, honor, integrity, valor, and sacrifice demonstrated by the men and women who serve and have served our country so selflessly as members of the military. We salute each of you and pray God’s blessings on you and on your families.

Good Morning,

Happy Topper Homecoming Week! Another busy and special week is off to a good start on the Hill. We were blessed this morning by Dr. Kern’s report regarding our Make a Difference Day emphasis. There is still time to contribute clothing at one of the locations. Many thanks to all who have already supported this very good cause. We were also blessed by the chapel address delivered by Dr. Meeks. Thank you for reminding us that Jesus modeled sacrificial, selfless service.

Several BMC-ers will be traveling today to the Mississippi Baptist Convention in Jackson. Pray for all of our Convention participants and especially for Dr. Jim Futral and Dr. David Hamilton (both BMC grads) as they will be providing leadership. We are looking forward to a great time of worship and fellowship and to the opportunity to connect with many of our Ministerial Alumni at the dinner on Tuesday evening.

While in Jackson I will have the wonderful opportunity to attend a luncheon honoring our own Dr. Johnny L. Mattox. Dr. Mattox will receive the 2013 Distinguished Science Teacher Award, presented by the Mississippi Science Teacher’s Association. The award will be presented at the Annual Convention of the Association, to be held October 27-29, 2013, at the Marriott Hotel in Jackson. Congratulations, Dr. Mattox!

Set aside for the observance of Founder’s Day, Friday will be a very special time on the Hill. The 10:00 chapel program promises to be a memorable celebration of our heritage. We look forward to welcoming home many alumni and special friends, including President Coward and President Fisher. On Friday afternoon at 2:00 we will acknowledge the amazing contributions of Carla Freeman Benson at a retirement reception in her honor in the administration building foyer.

On Friday evening the Pumpkin Patch is the location for celebrating homecoming eve, and then Saturday is the “big day.” We will welcome prospective students, alumni, guests, and Topper fans to the campus for a huge homecoming celebration, including live music, arts and craft vendors, classic cars, and lots of great food. The Homecoming Court will be presented in Berry Auditorium at 12:30, followed by tip off of the 2013-14 basketball season at 2:00 in Tyler Gymnasium. I encourage everyone to put on their BMC gear and come on out to cheer our Toppers on to victory. Go Toppers!

An event of this magnitude requires considerable planning. I offer this special word of thanks to National Alumni Association President Audrey Caldwell, to Alumni Affairs Director Lea Bennett, and to a host of others that envisioned and produced this occasion, including David Harrell, Anna Quinn, Gary Linville, Amy Thurmond, and Tommy Peters.

A special word of gratitude to Chris Driskell, Larry McMillin, and our maintenance staff for providing a picturesque reminder of the thanksgiving season.

Happy Columbus Day!

I hope everyone enjoyed a lovely fall break. My family and I had the great pleasure to attend the 175th Anniversary Celebration at First Baptist Church in Ripley yesterday. Blessings and congratulations to this great church. May God continue to bless Dr. Yancey and the congregation with opportunities to share the Gospel and serve the community. (Among the special guests yesterday was M.P. Lowrey himself—see the picture below!)
Today is Topper Preview Day at BMC and that means that we will welcome many prospective students and their families to the campus. Let’s extend a warm welcome to one and all.
Let’s welcome as well Dr. Leora Duce, who will arrive on campus later today and be with us to kick off our first series of TACT workshops. TACT stands for Toppers Acting Civilly Together. Assisted by Kayce Carr, Dr. Duce will be focusing on aspects of professional etiquette in the workshops scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
Sam Rainer, President of Rainer Research, will be our chapel speaker today.
Next Sunday I will have the opportunity to speak at Harmony Baptist Church in Walnut. I’ll be traveling Sunday afternoon to the Mississippi Association of Colleges and Universities conference at Hinds Community College and will return to campus on Tuesday.

Have a blessed week.

Let them give thanks to the LORD
for His faithful love
and His wonderful works for
all humanity.

Greetings!
Wasn’t it refreshing to step outside into a crisp fall morning! What a wonderful way to start another week at Blue Mountain College. Mid-semester is upon us, and we will observe fall break to close out the week. Offices will be closed this Thursday and Friday.
Congratulations to the cast and crew of Annie for an uplifting and delightful performance. I enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you, Mr. Andre and Dr. Kantack, for your leadership and vision.
We will have more special guests on our campus this week. Please join me in welcoming representatives from the Southern States Athletic Conference who will be here on Tuesday to tape a segment about BMC to air on the “Southern States Showcase” (Fox Sports South) this fall. On Friday, the Education Commission of the Mississippi Baptist Convention will have its fall meeting at BMC.
Please remember me as I will be traveling on Thursday to Coahoma Community College to participate in the investiture of Dr. Valmadge Towner. The College extends its congratulations to Dr. Towner.
Congratulations also to Dr. Douglas C. Bain for being named this year’s Humanities Teacher Award Recipient. Dr. Bain will deliver a lecture Tuesday evening at 7:00 in Garrett Hall Auditorium on “The Sky Pilot: The International Influence and Literary Legacy of a Canadian Clergyman.” A reception will follow in the Guyton Library. The public is invited to this presentation.

Blessings to all for a safe and rejuvenating fall break!

Take delight in the LORD, and He will give you your heart’s desires.

Greetings on this rainy Monday!

Our day was brightened by the challenge delivered this morning in chapel by Dr. Daniel Caldwell, Dean of the Cooper School of Missions at William Carey. Thank you, Dr. Caldwell, for presenting David to us as a model for loving God with our minds.
This is the week many of us having been looking forward to with great anticipation. Annie opens on campus tomorrow and runs through Saturday, October 5th. Evening performances are scheduled for October 1, 3, 4, and 5, beginning at 7:30 in Garrett auditorium. Check out our website for information on matinees. Best wishes to the cast and crew for a fabulous run!
We welcome our Board of Trustees to our campus this Friday for their annual Fall meeting. Please be in prayer for their time on campus. We are grateful to each of them for their service to Blue Mountain College.

Have a blessed week!

Good Morning!

As an English professor, I’m always interested in learning new words—particularly words that describe a common occurrence. I had no idea, for instance, that the billowy trail left behind by a jet is called a “contrail.” I learned this weekend that the scent outside after it rains is called “petrichor.” Wasn’t it a blessing to enjoy the “petrichor” that followed Friday’s much-needed rain? This new word reminded me of the song that likens the name of Jesus to the “fragrance after the rain.” How good it is to be refreshed and blessed by the name of our Lord!

We will welcome to our campus today the Executive Committee of our Board of Trustees: Harold Wayne Hankins, Mary Childs, Linda Gholston, and David Hamilton. Thank you for your service to BMC.
Tomorrow is the annual faculty-student softball game. Play hard and have fun!

Have a wonderful week!

Good Afternoon!

I hope that you have enjoyed this very warm Monday. Helping us get the week off to a great start were the many pastors from North Mississippi and West Tennessee who were on campus today for the Northeast Mississippi Pastor’s Conference. Tomorrow we will welcome the participants in this fall’s January Bible Study workshop led by Dr. Matt Buckles of First Baptist, Vicksburg. Also, tomorrow at 3:05 in Fisher Washburn 108 Dr. Cheryl Ware, Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education at Itawamba Community College, will host an information session on Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and other arm/hand conditions.

One way to beat the summer heat is to enjoy some sweet tea or choose from a host of other tasty concoctions at the Mountain Fountain, located in the Johnnie Armstrong Gal-ry. We’re grateful to Gary and Heather Linville for setting up shop and making these refreshments available to the campus.

Congratulations to the BMC men’s golf team for their tournament win today!

I’ll be speaking Thursday evening to the Century Civic Club in Ripley.

Please remember Carter Witt in your prayers. Carter’s grandmother passed away today.

Check out this special Brandon Heath song as a pleasant way to end a busy day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DEHb1UjsLo
