Blue Mountain College began its commencement season with its annual Awards Day program that recognized student achievement in various academic disciplines and leadership areas. Dr. Ronald Meeks (right), professor of Biblical and Associated Studies, presented Micah Russell (left), a senior biology major from Pontotoc, the BMC Ministerial Alumni Bible Award that recognizes the graduating senior who has the highest academic average for courses in Bible.

Russell also received the James L. Travis Outstanding Church-Related Vocation Student Award. This honor was established by the BMC Board of Trustees in recognition of the contributions made to the College by Dr. James L. Travis and in appreciation of his Christian dedication and influence which are known throughout Mississippi and the Southern Baptist Convention.

The award is presented to an outstanding male church-related vocation student who, in the judgement of the faculty and staff, has shown consistent Christian leadership ability through his actions and attitude and who is dependable and shows a high degree of promise which should manifest itself in the same type of fruitful life as Dr. Travis’ was through the years.

In addition, Russell completed all the requirements to earn the Leora Duce Leadership Diploma. Micah was one of seven students in the inaugural class to receive the honor recognizing his leadership qualities and abilities while at Blue Mountain College. Dr. Leora Duce was on hand to present the diplomas.
