MAYFIELD, Ky. – The TranSouth Athletic Conference has announced its first weekly award of the 2013 baseball season, and for the first time in TranSouth history, the award goes to a Blue Mountain Topper.
Channing Sanders of Blue Mountain College has been named the Conference’s Pitcher of the week after an outstanding effort on the mound in the Toppers’ Saturday afternoon 9-1 win over Tougaloo College.
Sanders – a 6’3” junior from Ackerman – threw the first no-hitter in the 3-year history of the Blue Mountain College program in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. In the game, Sanders threw seven innings, allowed a single unearned run, struck out nine Bulldogs, and did not walk a batter.
The no-hitter was the first in the three-year history of BMC baseball, but it did not stand alone for long, as teammate Justin Daniels tossed a five inning no-no in the back half of the twin bill.
On the weekend, Blue Mountain pitching – including Beau Cummings – allowed just four hits to the Bulldogs, all in Friday’s series opener, and threw a total of 247 pitches in 21 innings – for an average of just 11.8 pitches per inning.
