BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – Just a mention of the title The Sound of Music is all it takes to bring a smile, and usually a song, to the lips of most folks.

“It’s a timeless musical that people of all ages, shapes and sizes love,” said Jim Andre, associate professor of speech and fine arts at Blue Mountain College says. “It’s a show that’s part of our psyche, a show that we just love.”

BMC will present The Sound of Music on campus October 2-6 in Garrett Auditorium. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 2, Oct. 4, Oct. 5 and Oct. 6. Ticket prices are $7 for adults and $5 for students and children.

A pair of school matinees are set for 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 3 and Oct. 4, and a senior adult matinee is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Oct. 5. Matinee tickets are $5.

“As soon as you mention The Sound of Music, people are interested,” said Andre, the show’s director. “It touches something in audiences everywhere you go. I think part of it is optimism,” he said. “We like shows with happy endings; you just feel good when you leave the show.”

Andre said the BMC production has a large cast – 17 college students, six children (2 from Ripley, 4 from Tupelo) and one adult – including the entire Kantack Family from Tupelo. Dr. Jerri Lamar Kantack, associate professor of music at BMC, is the show’s musical director; her daughter Emma plays Louisa von Trapp; and her husband, Keith takes on the role of Herr Zeller.

“I’ve been really pleased with the way the show has come together,” Andre said. “One of the things that is a lot of fun is seeing the kids in the show and how they evolve, but also seeing our students interact with the kids. They’ve all handled their parts very well.”
Daniel Rodgers, a senior from Lawrenceburg, Tenn., and Ciara Boyle, a sophomore from Holly Springs, have the lead roles: Capt. Georg von Trapp and Maria Rainer.

Anna Rainey, a sophomore from Clinton, is the show’s choreographer. “It’s one of the first shows where we’ve had a lot of true choreography,” Andre pointed out, “and Anna has done a great job.”
